When I spent two years in Hong Kong I got to know Dr Philip Newsome who was not only a senior lecturer in dentistry but a devout historian of the Macau Grand Prix which started out on the former Portuguese Island colony near Hong Kong in 1954 with the first race bringing forth a wide variety of cars from Jaguar XK120s to a humble road equipped Austin Atlantic. The race was won by Eddie Carvalho in his Triumph TR2.

The early photographs are confusing as the entire circuit today is crowded with high rise flats but it was a race that was to become much more important in the 1960s with D type Jaguars and Lotus 7s until, in 1963 when single seaters introduced alongside sports cars.

By now the Europeans and Australians began to take an interest and it evolved into a key Formula 3 race with supporting motor cycle and touring car races. In 1974 future grand prix driver Vern Schuppan won driving a March 722 and he won again in 1976 with a Ralt. From then on the race was becoming a showcase for future talent amongst the finners being Ayrton Senna with a Ralt Toyota in 1983, Michael Schumacher with a Reynard VW in 1990 and David Coulthard,Ralt,in 1991.

The book is well illustrated with full grid positions and times and results
