Philip Porter of Porter Press has been running two series’ of books that feature the complete history of individual cars. Naturally, the cars concerned have particular interest and this book Ferrari 857S, concerns the history of a car that started out as a 3 litre 750 Monza, was then given a 2 litre Mondial engine and eventually it became the 857S with a 3.5 litre engine. All of those engines were four-cylinder models designed by Colombo.
This particular car was the ultimate expression of that engine and was one of four built during 1955 to challenge the all-conquering 300SLR Mercedes Benz cars. Three of them were entered for the RAC Tourist Trophy Race, the penultimate round in the World Sports Car Championship where it was driven by Umberto Maglioli and Maurice Trintignant.
The book is number 9 in the Porter series of Exceptional Cars and was written by Ian Wagstaff. It contains reports and photographs from all the races in which the car took part as well as background stories on its development and on the engineers, personalities and drivers involved.
