The Jowett Jupiter

This is the latest edition of Edmund Nankivell’s book on the history of the Jowett Jupiter.

The Jowett Jupiter is a car that has almost been forgotten but it was an interesting car produced by the Jowett company that had been founded by 1906. In 1947 Jowett’s engineer Gerry Palmer had designed the new post-war car called the Javelin Jupiter; a previous model called the Javelin had been built in the 1930s.

Palmer came up with a design that was modern-looking, streamlined and was powered by a flat-four engine. It proved to be very suitable for competition work and became a regular competitor in rallies and racing. The story behind the car shows just how advanced Jowett were at the time and how successful the car was. It is well written and gives a picture of the way in which the British motor industry developed just after WWII

One of the successful Jowett Javelin drivers in racing was a young Scot called Billy Skelly and he drove in the RAC Tourist Trophy race amongst other events.

This particular book was given to Graham Gauld by Billy Skelly who had been friends since the 1950s. It is Skelly’s own personal copy signed to him by the Author.
